New Kensington was built by Alcoa, and it shows in the housing. Solid brick homes climb the hill from the river in tight rows, most with wide front porches and the kind of wood fascia that permanent track anchors into cleanly. Thraxel makes the trip from Kittanning in about 35 minutes, and the Tarentum Bridge puts us on either bank of the river in a couple of minutes more.

Downtown is the interesting part. Fifth Avenue has been filling back in with small businesses and makers, and a storefront with permanent lighting across the cornice reads from the whole block.
