What a permanent lighting system needs from your Wi-Fi
The system needs a normal home Wi-Fi connection to talk to the Thraxel Lighting app, the same kind of connection a smart thermostat or video doorbell already uses.

The short version
A residential permanent lighting install, detailed at thraxel.com/permanent/, connects to a household's existing Wi-Fi network during setup, the same way any other connected device does. No dedicated network, extra router or special equipment is required beyond what most homes already have running.
Most modern home routers broadcast on the common 2.4 GHz band that smart-home devices generally use, and that is the connection type the lighting controller looks for during setup. If a router already runs a smart thermostat, video doorbell or smart plug, it can run this system too.
Setup happens once, during the onboarding step after install, and the connection stays live in the background from then on. There is no daily maintenance required on the homeowner's end.
Where the controller sits
The controller connects near where the wiring terminates, typically close to an exterior wall or garage, and needs a Wi-Fi signal reaching that spot. Most homes already have adequate coverage there since it is close to the house's own network equipment.
Homes with weak signal at the far end of a long property, a detached garage or a large lot, sometimes need a signal extender the same way any other far-flung smart device would. This is uncommon on a typical residential lot but comes up on bigger properties.

What happens if the Wi-Fi goes down
A brief internet outage does not turn the lights off. Scenes and schedules already saved to the system keep running locally, and the app simply cannot send new commands or changes until the connection returns.
This is worth knowing before a storm, since Western PA sees plenty of weather that can knock out home internet for an hour or two. A scene already running when the connection drops keeps running exactly as scheduled through the outage.

Commercial properties and bigger networks
Larger commercial properties, hotels, restaurants and office parks, sometimes run separate networks for guest Wi-Fi and building systems. The lighting controller should sit on the building's operational network rather than a guest network that resets or restricts new devices.
Properties already running Control4 or another whole-home platform typically have a network built for exactly this kind of device already, and the lighting system slots into that existing infrastructure rather than needing anything new.
On a commercial job, network placement is discussed with the property's IT contact or facilities manager during planning, since a lighting controller sitting on the wrong network is one of the more avoidable causes of connectivity trouble after install.
Troubleshooting a dropped connection
If the app stops responding to a lighting system, the first thing to check is the same thing anyone checks with a smart device: is the router working, and is the controller within normal range of the signal. Most connection issues resolve with a router or controller reset.
