Controller resets, router swaps and the Wi-Fi dead zone in your garage
The controller is the only piece of a permanent system that cares about your internet. When it drops, the roofline keeps its last scene and waits. This post covers why controllers lose Wi-Fi, how to bring one back, and the reset you should never do.

What the controller actually does
Every Thraxel permanent install runs through one controller. It takes a command from your phone, a voice assistant or a schedule, and pushes the data stream out to the pixels along the track. The pixels themselves have no radio. They only ever hear the controller, which is why a Wi-Fi problem never damages the lights, it just makes them unreachable.
That design has a nice side effect. When the controller loses the network, the roofline holds whatever scene was running. If it was on Everyday Warm at sunset, it stays on Everyday Warm. A schedule stored on the controller keeps firing even without internet. What you lose is the ability to change things from your phone until the connection comes back.
The controller lives indoors or in a sealed enclosure, usually in the garage or near the electrical panel, because that is where the power is. It is also, in a lot of Western PA homes, the worst Wi-Fi spot in the house.
The four reasons controllers drop
A power interruption is the most common. A storm rolls through the Allegheny valley, the power flickers, the router and the controller both reboot, and the controller comes up before the router is ready. It waits a while, then gives up. Power-cycle the controller once the router is fully back and it rejoins.
A router change is second. New provider, new hardware, a new network name or password. The controller has no way to know and keeps calling the old name. This one needs a reconnect, which is a short process Tyson walks you through or does in person.
Weak signal is third. A detached garage, a stone or brick wall between the router and the controller, or a long ranch with the router at the far end will all leave the controller at the edge of range. The symptom is intermittent: works in the morning, offline at night, laggy on weekends. The fix is a mesh node closer to the controller, not a new controller.
Router settings are fourth and rarest. Some newer routers combine the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands under one name and steer devices around. Most lighting controllers want 2.4 GHz. If the controller drops right after a router firmware update, that is the first thing we look at.
Power-cycle, do not factory-reset
There are two very different things people call a reset. A power-cycle removes power for thirty seconds and restores it. The controller reboots, keeps everything it knows, and tries the network again. This is safe, and it is the first thing we ask you to do on any call.
A factory reset is a different animal. It wipes the controller back to how it left the box: no Wi-Fi credentials, no zone map, no scenes, no schedules. Everything we built for your house at install goes with it. Rebuilding that takes a visit and time. Unless Tyson tells you to on the phone, do not do it.
If a power-cycle does not bring it back, stop there and call. Tyson at 724-859-4390 handles every service question directly. There is no call center between you and the person who installed your lights.

Fixing the garage dead zone for good
We see the same layout over and over in Armstrong and Butler County: a two-story colonial with the router in a first-floor office and an attached garage on the far side of the kitchen. Two walls, a refrigerator, and a steel garage door later, the controller gets a signal it can barely hold.
The clean fix is a mesh Wi-Fi node placed within a room or two of the controller, or relocating the router toward the center of the house. Both are inexpensive next to the cost of the lighting and they improve every other device on that side of the house. We flag weak-signal locations at the free consult so you know before install day.
A wired option exists as well. If there is Ethernet near the controller, a hardwired connection removes Wi-Fi from the equation entirely. Ask us about it during the consult if your house already has drops in the garage or basement.
What we check on a site visit
When a controller keeps dropping and the basics are ruled out, we come look at it. We check that the controller is getting clean power and not sharing a circuit with a freezer or a well pump that browns it out on startup. We check signal strength at the actual controller location, not in the driveway. We check the router band settings.
We also confirm the controller firmware is current. Updates are pushed to the controller and occasionally a controller that has been offline for weeks misses one. Once it is back on the network and up to date, it tends to stay put.
Inside the warranty window, 3 years on parts and 1 year on labor, a controller that is genuinely faulty is replaced. In practice the controller is rarely the problem, and we would rather tell you that than swap hardware that is fine.
Bluetooth, campers and no Wi-Fi at all
If you have no reliable internet at the property, a lake camp near Slippery Rock or a hunting cabin up past Clarion, the answer is not to fight Wi-Fi. Our camper and RV option runs on Bluetooth with no network at all, and the same approach works for some remote structures. You control it from the phone standing in the yard.
For everything else, a stable 2.4 GHz network with decent signal at the controller is the whole requirement.
