Hotel and resort exterior lighting guests remember
A guest forms an opinion of a hotel in the thirty seconds between the car door and the lobby. Exterior lighting owns that half minute. Here is how we light hotels, inns and resorts across the Thraxel footprint so it works for them.

First impressions happen outside
Hospitality lighting has one job that a restaurant or plaza does not: it has to work for a guest who arrives at 11 p.m. in February after a five-hour drive. The entry has to be obvious, the walk to the door has to feel safe, and the building has to look like the photos.
That is a design problem before it is a product problem. We begin every hotel project by walking the arrival sequence in the dark: the sign at the road, the drive, the porte-cochere, the lobby doors, and then the amenity areas guests find later. Each one becomes a zone.
Underneath it is our standard permanent lighting: RGBWW pixels in color-matched track, IP67 silicone housing on 16-gauge wire, run from the Thraxel Lighting app. Specs live at thraxel.com/permanent/. Hotels simply use more of it.
Zones on a hotel or resort property
Amenity zones matter as much as the entry. A pool deck lit in warm white at 9 p.m. in July sells the room upgrade next year. A dock on Lake Erie or the Allegheny lit in color is the photo a guest posts, and the marine-rated housing is built for exactly that spray and freeze. The dock detail is at thraxel.com/blog/dock-and-waterfront-lighting/.
Event lawns and pavilions get their own zone so a wedding coordinator can run the couple's colors without touching the guest-facing entry.
- Porte-cochere and entry canopy, usually a dedicated zone
- Main roofline and parapet
- Pool deck, pool house and cabana
- Docks and waterfront edges at lake and river properties
- Pavilions, firepits and event lawns
- Walkways, bollards and parking transitions
Scenes for a hospitality calendar
Everyday Warm runs most nights: the 2700K diode gives a true warm white that photographs correctly on stone and timber. Then the calendar takes over. A Laurel Highlands lodge runs fall gold in October and Christmas red and green through Epiphany. A Pittsburgh-area hotel runs black and gold on Steelers home weekends and keeps the same palette for Pirates and Penguins games, since this is one of the few cities where every team shares its colors.
Weddings and corporate events are where the 16 million colors earn their place. A coordinator picks the couple's palette in the app and the building matches the invitations. Music sync exists for the ones who want it.
Every scene can be scheduled by date and by zone, and the app works with Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit and Control4 for properties that already automate the building. Integration details are at thraxel.com/blog/control4-and-whole-home-integration/.
Operations: why maintenance staff like it
Facilities managers care about three things: who goes up on the roof, how long a failure takes to fix, and what it costs to run. With permanent track nobody goes up on the roof after install day. Pixels are individually addressable, so a single bad pixel is diagnosed by itself and swapped, typically the same day, instead of a full-run replacement.
Power is negligible for a building that runs a commercial kitchen. Each pixel pulls roughly 0.3 watts. Warranty is 3 years on parts and 1 year on labor, and commercial service plans with a scheduled preventive check are available for properties that want the lighting handled entirely.
When to install and how long it takes
Hotels have low-occupancy windows and we work inside them. Late winter and early spring are ideal in Western PA for a lodge that fills from Memorial Day on, and hotel-scale installs run several days rather than the one to two days a home takes. Crews only install when weather permits.
The process begins with a free on-site walk, followed within 48 hours by a render of your actual property lit in the scenes you asked about. Owners use that render to get board or brand approval.
