Will permanent lights survive a Pennsylvania winter?
They will, and that is the whole point of the product. Permanent lighting is engineered to stay on the house through a January in Armstrong County, not to be pulled down before the first ice storm. Here is what the hardware is made of and where winter can still bite.

The short answer
A Thraxel permanent lighting system is designed to stay up year-round, and Western Pennsylvania winters are the reason we specify the parts we do. The pixels sit inside IP67 marine-grade silicone, the wire is 16-gauge, and the entire run is shielded by a color-matched aluminum track fastened tight to the fascia. Nothing about a cold January is news to that hardware.
We work in a region that gets real winter. Kittanning sits on the Allegheny River, which means river fog, freezing rain and wet, heavy snow that clings to whatever it lands on. Butler and Indiana get more of it. We are not shipping a product built for Phoenix and hoping for the best.

What a Western PA winter throws at a roofline
Cold on its own is not the enemy. LEDs are perfectly comfortable at low temperatures, and silicone stays flexible well below anything Pennsylvania produces. The real stresses come from water and movement: freezing rain that glazes a roof edge, thaw water that refreezes overnight, snow sliding off a metal roof, and wind loading on the eave during a January front.
Freeze-thaw is the pattern that kills cheap outdoor lighting. Water finds a gap in a housing, freezes, expands, and opens that gap a little wider. Repeat it forty nights in a row and a clip-on bulb string is finished. Solid silicone encapsulation has no gap for water to enter in the first place, which is why the IP67 rating matters more than any word printed on a box.
Then there is the plain physical side: ice building along gutters, a homeowner who cannot see what is happening up there, and a squirrel that decided the soffit was a fine winter apartment. We have seen every one of those on service calls, and the design accounts for them.

How the hardware is built for it
IP67 means the pixel housing is sealed against dust and can be submerged in water without the electronics getting wet. Our pixels are also salt-tested, a standard borrowed from marine hardware where spray eats metal for breakfast. Road salt mist from a plowed street in February is mild by comparison.
The 16-gauge wire is thicker than what ships on most consumer light strings. Heavier copper handles voltage drop over long runs, shrugs off nicks, and stays put when ice pulls on it. Thin wire is where winter failures start on DIY installs, and it is the first thing we upgraded years ago while we were still hanging seasonal lights as 160 Glow.
The track is aluminum, matched to your trim color, and mounted flush against the fascia. It keeps direct ice contact off the pixel run, sheds snow from its top edge, and gives the system a rigid spine so nothing sags or swings. Every pixel is individually addressable, so if one does quit, the app tells us which one instead of us guessing along 300 feet of roofline.
Where winter can still cause problems
We will not pretend the system is invincible. The failure modes we actually see are physical, not electrical. A heavy ice dam that grows behind a gutter and pushes outward can stress a track mount. A roof rake dragged carelessly along the eave can catch the lip of the track. A gutter guard installed after the lights can pinch a wire.
Power is the other one. A surge from a winter storm or a tripped GFCI in a detached garage can take the controller offline. That is not a light failure, it is a circuit failure, and it is usually a two-minute fix once someone checks the outlet. None of that is a reason to skip permanent lighting. It is a reason to have it installed by a crew that knows where ice forms on a Western PA roof and routes the track accordingly.
What we do differently on install day
Placement is most of winter durability. We mount track to the fascia, never to the gutter, because gutters move under ice load and fascia does not. We keep the run above the drip line so thaw water does not sheet across the pixels every afternoon. Where a valley dumps snow onto a lower roof, we route around the impact zone.
Every joint between track sections and the controller is weatherproofed rather than taped. The controller goes indoors or in a protected enclosure, not zip-tied to a downspout. And we do the final walkthrough with you so you know where the power feed lives before the first storm buries it.
All of that is agreed on paper first. The render mock-up of your actual house comes back within 48 hours of the consult, so the plan is settled before a single screw goes into the trim.
If something fails in January
