The cord problem
Most outdoor cord problems trace back to three habits
Extension cords look interchangeable until you look closer. Length, gauge and how a cord is laid out on the ground all change how safely it carries a load, and holiday decorating is where most of the common mistakes show up at once.

Mistake one: chaining cords end to end
Plugging one extension cord into another to reach a far corner of the yard adds resistance at every connection and can push the total run past what the thinnest cord in the chain is rated for. Each added joint is also another spot exposed to moisture, dirt, and mechanical wear from being stepped on or driven over.
If a single cord will not reach, that is a sign to plan a shorter route or a heavier-gauge cord rated for the full distance, not a reason to add a second cord to the end of the first and hope the combination holds up.
Mistake two: the wrong gauge for the distance
A lighter-gauge cord loses voltage over distance, and the farther it runs, the more it loses. A cord that is fine for fifteen feet to a porch outlet is not automatically fine for eighty feet to a tree at the back of the lot, even if both jobs look similar at a glance.
Heavier gauge means a lower number on the label, and it is worth checking that number against both the distance and the total wattage of whatever is plugged in at the far end before committing to a layout for the season.
Mistake three: routing through snow, puddles and door gaps
A cord laid through standing water or packed snow sits in the one condition it is least built to handle for hours at a time, and a cord pinched under a door or window sash can have its insulation slowly worn through at that exact point every time the door opens and closes.
Route cords along dry ground where possible, keep connections up off wet surfaces, and use a cord specifically made to pass through a door gap if that is unavoidable rather than closing a door directly on the jacket every night of the season.
A cord run under a rug or a walkway mat outside creates a hidden heat and wear point in the same way a pinched door gap does, since the covering traps whatever heat the cord generates and hides any developing damage from view.
What overloaded cords actually feel like
A cord carrying more than its rated load gets warm to the touch, sometimes noticeably so at the connection points. That warmth is a sign to unplug something, not a normal part of running holiday lights, and it is worth checking by hand periodically through a busy decorating season rather than assuming everything is fine because the lights are still on.
- Never route a cord through standing water or under snow that will melt and refreeze
- Never close a door or window on a cord to hold a gap
- Never exceed the cord's rated wattage with everything plugged into it added up
- Never leave a connection point resting directly on wet grass or soil
