A pool deck at night is one of the least forgiving spots for bad lighting: standing water, wet feet, and a structure that gets used well after the rest of the yard has gone dark. Here is how we approach it.
Deck edges and steps matter more than the water
It is tempting to focus all the lighting attention on the pool itself, but the deck perimeter, the steps into the water and any change in elevation around the pool are where accidents actually happen. Low, ground-level fixtures along the deck edge give a clear line between pool deck and everything past it.
Any step down from a pool deck to a lawn or a lower patio should get the same treatment we recommend for regular deck stairs, a low fixture at the edge of the tread so the change in level is obvious at a glance, not something guessed at in the dark.
Lighting the cabana or pool house structure
A cabana or pool house reads best at night with the same layered approach as a pergola: uplighting on posts or corner framing for texture, a soft downlight over any seating or lounging area inside, and fascia or roofline lighting if the structure has enough of a roofline to trace.
For structures with a bar, changing area or storage, task-level lighting inside those functional zones should stay separate from the ambient lighting outside, so someone changing or mixing a drink has enough light without flooding the whole pool deck.

Why marine-grade housing is not optional here
Pool decks are the single wettest zone on most properties outside of an actual dock, between splash, pool chemicals in the air, and standing water after a storm. Thraxel uses IP67 marine-grade silicone housing on 16-gauge wire for every poolside install, the same rating we use on dock and waterfront lighting.
Fixture placement also matters near a pool for code reasons, keeping wired fixtures a safe distance from the water's edge and using low-voltage runs throughout. This is one area where a DIY kit bought online can create a real electrical hazard rather than just a cosmetic problem.
A diving board, slide or water feature also benefits from dedicated lighting rather than relying on general deck coverage to reach it, since these features tend to sit further out and get used well after dark on a summer night. Waterfalls and fountains built into a pool get treated the same as dock and waterfront fixtures elsewhere on a property, since moving water and splash are constant there, not occasional.
Color scenes for pool parties, warm white for evening swims
A pool area lit in warm white most nights can shift to color for a specific occasion, a birthday, a Fourth of July gathering, or a Halloween pool party, all from the same app used for the rest of the property. The switch does not require touching a fixture.
Some homeowners run a rotating color scene specifically for pool parties while keeping the cabana's interior task lighting fixed on warm white, which keeps the functional space usable even while the deck itself is running a color show.
Cost and how a quote comes together
Every pool deck is a different shape with a different fixture count, which is why we do not print Thraxel prices. National industry estimates commonly place installed landscape fixtures between roughly $150 and $400 each, and a pool deck plus cabana project typically uses more fixtures per linear foot than an open lawn because of the deck perimeter requirement.

Above-ground and in-ground pools need different plans
An in-ground pool with a surrounding deck gives more options for embedded deck lighting and perimeter fixtures set into hardscape. An above-ground pool, more common on smaller lots throughout Armstrong and Indiana counties, usually relies more on nearby landscape uplighting and a lit deck or platform around the access ladder rather than fixtures built into the pool structure itself.
Either setup benefits from the same core rule: light the edges and the entry points first, since that is where footing matters most, and treat color scenes and accent lighting as the layer added on top once the functional coverage is solid.
