How professionals wrap outdoor trees in Christmas lights
A well-wrapped tree has an even spiral on the trunk, light carried out along the major limbs, no visible cord drops and a plug that lands at the outlet. Here is how our crews do it on maples, oaks and evergreens across Western Pennsylvania.

What a professional wrap looks like
Stand across the street from a pro-wrapped tree and three things are true. The spacing between turns on the trunk is identical from the ground to the first branch. The light continues out along the limbs instead of stopping at the crotch. And you cannot find the extension cord. Those three details are the entire difference between a wrapped tree and a tree with lights on it.
The fourth thing you cannot see is the plan. Before a strand goes on, the crew knows the trunk circumference, roughly how many feet of lights the tree will take, where power comes from and how many strands can safely run end to end. Trees eat product. A mature maple wrapped trunk and limbs can take far more light than an entire roofline, and running out halfway up is how DIY trees end up lit on one side.
Wrapping the trunk
The trunk sets the rhythm. We start at the base near where power arrives, secure the end of the strand and spiral upward with a consistent gap between wraps. A tighter gap makes a brighter column and burns more product; a wider gap is softer and cheaper. The gap chosen is the gap kept, all the way up. Eyeballing it is what produces the tree that gets denser as it climbs because the installer got nervous about running out.
On a rough-barked oak, the strand grips naturally. On smooth bark or a young tree, we secure the wrap at intervals with ties that come off cleanly in January and never with anything driven into the tree. The bark is living tissue. Staples and nails are off the table for the same reason they are off the table on your fascia.
Where the trunk splits, the wrap continues up the dominant leader and the secondary trunks get their own runs. Each split is a decision point, and the render we build before install already shows which leaders get light so the crew is not improvising on a ladder.
Carrying light out the branches
Branch wrapping is what makes a tree look lit instead of striped. The technique is out and back: spiral out along a limb to a chosen stopping point, then spiral back toward the trunk on the same limb so the wrap doubles and the strand ends where the next limb begins. The return trip is what keeps the branch evenly bright and the cord hidden.
How far out to go depends on the tree and the budget. On a big front-yard maple we usually wrap the main scaffold limbs a few feet out; on an ornamental crabapple or a small dogwood, nearly to the tips. The stopping point is set the same on every limb so the tree looks balanced from every side, not just from the street.
Evergreens are a different animal. A spruce or fir is not wrapped limb by limb; it is lit as a cone, with strands laid in loops from the top down through the outer foliage. The goal is even coverage across the surface, which is why we light them from a ladder or lift rather than throwing strands from the ground.

Power, without the extension cord mess
Every wrap starts at the outlet, not at the top of the tree. The crew runs a rated outdoor cord to the base, keeps it against the ground and out of the mowing and walking path, and the first strand begins there. Strands are connected end to end only up to the manufacturer's rated maximum for that product, which on commercial-grade LED is generous but not unlimited.
When a tree needs more strands than one run allows, a second feed comes up the far side of the trunk so both halves light evenly from separate circuits. On a house where the nearest outlet is on a GFCI that trips in a wet December, we say so at the consult. A tree that goes dark every time it rains is a power problem, not a light problem.

Which Western PA trees wrap well
Maples and oaks are the workhorses. Strong trunks, well-defined scaffold limbs, and they hold a spiral cleanly once the leaves are down. River birch and sycamore look striking because the pale bark glows behind the bulbs. Crabapples, dogwoods and Japanese maples are small enough to wrap nearly to the tips and become the showpiece of a front yard in places like Fox Chapel and Saxonburg.
Blue spruce, white pine and Norway spruce are the evergreens we light most, usually as a cone with warm white or multicolor minis. What wraps poorly: thin ornamental grasses, anything with thorns, and a tree with a dead leader or storm damage, which we flag rather than light. Squirrels, storms and the January unwrap
Trees are the part of a display most likely to need a service call. Squirrels chew wire, ice loads a limb, a windstorm off the Allegheny drops a branch onto a strand. Whatever the cause, we are back within 24 to 48 hours during the season and the repair is covered, no charge. That includes the squirrel. Nobody has figured out how to bill a squirrel.
Takedown starts January 4, weather permitting. Wrapped trees come off in reverse, back along the limbs and down the trunk, so the strands come away in order instead of in knots.
